Active Membership Review Process

ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒActive or Corresponding membership—that is, Voting Membership—is available to Associate members who either pass the ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒcertification exam, go through Active Membership Review, or obtain the ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒCredentialed Interpreter designation.

Candidates who obtain Voting Membership through Active Membership Review are not ATA-certified.

ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒVoting Membership opens doors to participation in the Association—from participating in elections to serving as a member of a Committee. It's your opportunity to help shape the future of the Association.

How to become an ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒvoting member

ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒAssociate Members who can demonstrate that they are professionally engaged in translation, interpreting, or closely related fields may apply for Voting Membership.

This qualification is satisfied if the member can meet all of the conditions in any one of the six categories below.

The application to become a voting member is free and online. No paperwork is required at the time the request is submitted, but the member must agree to provide the necessary documentation if audited.

Qualifications that meet voting membership requirements

1. Translators or interpreters
   • Current accreditation or certification by a member association of the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs or by the United States Federal Court Interpreter Certification Program; and
   • Proof of such accreditation or certification
2. Translators or interpreters
   Evidence of at least three years’ work as a translator or interpreter, which may include either of the following:
   • Three letters of reference from clients or supervisors; or
   • Copies of records of business activity such as Schedule C, corporate tax returns, 1099s, invoices, or work orders
3. Translators
   • Proof of a degree or certificate in translation (acceptable programs to be determined by the Education and Pedagogy Committee); and
   • One letter of reference from a client or supervisor
4. Interpreters
   • Proof of a degree or certificate in interpreting (acceptable programs to be determined by the Education and Pedagogy Committee); and
   • One letter of reference from a client or supervisor
5. Interpreters
   • ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒrecognition of non-ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒinterpreting credentials (See ÌÇÐÄvlogÃÛÌÒCredentialed Interpreter designation.)
6. Other
   Individuals professionally engaged in work closely related to translation and/or interpreting may submit evidence of at least three years’ work in a closely related field, which may include either of the following:
   • Teaching appointment letters; or
   • Terminology/lexicography research studies
